Description
The Temperance Rosary
The Temperance Rosary is dedicated to the virtue of self-mastery—the ordering of our desires so that the good things God has created remain in their proper place rather than becoming masters over us.
Temperance is not simply abstinence, nor does it teach us that pleasure is evil. Food, drink, rest, recreation, and the countless material goods of life are gifts. Temperance allows us to enjoy those gifts without becoming enslaved to them. It teaches the Christian to say both “yes” and “no” at the proper time, placing reason and faith above appetite.
Traditionally, temperance stands opposed to gluttony among the Seven Deadly Sins. Yet its reach extends much further. Whenever our appetites begin dictating our actions—whether through food, alcohol, possessions, entertainment, comfort, or other pleasures—temperance restores freedom by teaching us that desire does not have to be obeyed simply because it is felt.
The design of the Temperance Rosary reflects this restraint. Charcoal-stained wood Hail Mary beads create a sober, understated foundation, while Amethyst gemstone Our Father beads provide rich purple accents throughout the rosary. Amethyst is especially fitting here: its name comes from the ancient Greek amethystos, meaning “not intoxicated,” because the stone was historically associated with sobriety and protection against drunkenness. While Christians do not attribute such powers to a gemstone, that centuries-old association makes Amethyst a natural symbolic choice for a rosary devoted to temperance.
Purple also carries a deeply Catholic meaning. As the liturgical color associated particularly with Advent and Lent, it calls to mind penance, preparation, fasting, and the deliberate restraint through which Christians make greater room for God.
An Italian-made silver-toned Miraculous Medal centerpiece places Our Lady at the heart of the design, while an Italian-made silver-toned Pardon Crucifix directs the rosary ultimately toward Christ. Bound together with black USA-made 95 paracord, the result is intentionally restrained: dark, simple, and punctuated by the penitential purple of the Amethyst.
Handmade in the Fargo, North Dakota area by local Catholics, the Temperance Rosary is designed to accompany the daily practice of a virtue that ultimately leads not to deprivation, but freedom—the freedom to possess good things without allowing good things to possess us.
Lord, grant us mastery over our appetites, gratitude for Your gifts, and the wisdom to use all things according to Your will.
